What do the different numbers in Dolby Atmos stand for?

The numbers associated with Dolby Atmos refer to the number of channels and speakers in a given audio system setup. Here's a breakdown of what some of these numbers represent.

5.1.2 - This refers to a Dolby Atmos configuration with five surround sound channels, consisting of left and right speaker, center speaker, subwoofer (the ".1" in 5.1), left and right surround speakers, left and right top middle overhead speakers.

7.1.4 - This configuration includes seven surround sound channels, consisting of left and right speakers, center speaker, subwoofer (the ".1" in 7.1), left and right surround speakers, left and right rear surround speakers, left and right top front overhead speakers, left and right top rear overhead speakers.

9.1.6 - This setup features nine surround sound channels, consisting of left and right speakers, center speaker, subwoofer (the ".1" in 9.1), left and right wide speakers, left and right surround speakers, left and right rear surround speakers, left and right top front overhead speakers, left and right top middle overhead speakers and left and right top rear overhead speakers, offering even more precise audio placement and immersion.

These numbers represent the complexity and capability of the Dolby Atmos audio system, indicating the number of traditional surround sound channels, subwoofers, and speakers in the setup. The higher the numbers, the more channels and speakers are involved, resulting in a more immersive and enveloping audio experience.
